Business analysis is the discipline of identifying business needs. Business Needs may be divided into two types: Business Problems and Business Opportunities. Business Analysis also determines means for exploiting business opportunities  or solving business problems (Solutions).

Solutions often include a software-systems development component, but may also consist of process improvement, organizational change or strategic planning and policy development. The person who carries out this task is called a Business Analyst or BA.[2]

Business Analysts utilise a variety of strategies in order to present the customer with a collection of documents such as the following:

  • Scoping
  • Initial Funding
  • Requirements
  • Options
  • Technical Architecture
  • Risks
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Project Proposals
